Did somebody say stuffing? No, we didn’t think so…Just kidding - We know the rich, herby, savory elements of stuffing are synonymous with Thanksgiving and the feast just wouldn’t be the same without them.
But if you’re struggling to settle the old“stuffing baked inside or outside of the bird?”debate that has sparked many a family feud over the years, this dish may just be the solution.
Deeply flavorsome, this Cavatappi Sausage Bake is loaded up with herbaceous, earthy stuffing taste - including all the chewy, crispy edges you’ve been fighting your siblings over since you were kids.
Skip the stuffing this year and serve up this chewy, savory pasta version instead (Or make both... it is a Thanksgiving feast, after all!)
Ingredients
1 box Three Farm Daughters Cavatappi Pasta
1 pound ground Pork Sausage
2 tbsp fresh Thyme, finely chopped
2 tbsp fresh Sage, finely chopped
2 tbsp fresh Rosemary, finely chopped
Salt & Pepper
1 medium Onion, diced
1 clove Garlic, minced
2 tbsp Butter
2 tbsp Flour
2 cups Milk
1 cup Mozzarella, shredded
1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 cup Mozzarella, shredded
1 cup Breadcrumbs
2 tbsp Butter, melted
For Crunchy Crumb Topping:
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F, and bring a large pot of salted water to boil.
- Cook pasta as directed. Once cooked, drain pasta and set aside.
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, crumble up sausage meat and saute over medium heat until lightly golden. Once sausage begins to brown, add onion, garlic and herbs.
Cook, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes or until sausage is cooked through. Transfer sausage mixture and set aside to stay warm while you make the creamy sauce.
In the same saucepan used to brown the sausage, gently melt the butter over low-medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly.
- Slowly pour in the milk while continuing to whisk. Stir and simmer for 2 minutes, then gradually add mozzarella cheese and mix until smooth.
- Season to taste with salt, pepper and Worcestershire Sauce.
In a large bowl combine cooked pasta, sausage, and sauce. Transfer to a 9X13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle one cup shredded cheese on top.
For the crunchy topping, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and scatter on top of the cheese.
Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly, then divide between serving plates and enjoy!
